Best zombie books

Updated: Oct 29, 2025

Having been on somewhat of a zombie book reading frenzy over the last couple of months, while writing a new book with zombies called Dead Headz, I’m in a good position to recommend a few best zombie books that fans of the genre might want to check out, if you haven’t already. And yes, this post will end with a promotion of one of my titles that heavily features zombies. This more salesy part of the post will be well sign posted.

Autumn: The London Trilogy by David Moody

Now, if you like books where you’re rooting for a hero, there isn’t really one, but several across the three books- Autumn: Dawn, Autumn: Inferno and Autumn: Exodus. And in true Walking Dead style – a series that is referenced here, not all of them make it, so you’ll often find yourself changing allegiances when it comes to favourite characters.

And the baddies, apart from the undead which don’t seem to be quite so bloodthirsty as in other zombie stories I’ve read and written, are human too, with former policitian Dominic, and Eastern European Piotr likely to top your list of hurry up and get your comeuppance characters.

It’s a compelling series which I happily listened to back to back (about 30 hours worth). My only question is, unless I missed something, why is the subject of how these characters survived while 99.9% of the population perished never mentioned or tackled?

World War Z by Max Brooks

I found the World War Z book a little hard going and something you can dip in and out of as one chapter has little in common with the next. This format means it lacks the one hero you can get behind and the character arc you can follow – unless there’s something clever going on that I’ve completely missed out on.

So, whether you read the book first or see the film, it really doesn’t matter with World War Z as the two are worlds apart.

Zombie Fall Out by Mark Tufo

I like the light hearted take of this zombie apocalypse in Colorado, and the shifting first person viewpoint works. We mostly hear from the daddy of the group, Mike Talbot, former marine, so a handy man to have around during the apocalypse. Although it’s his wife Tracy who bosses the house, even when the undead close in and the safety of their three kids is at stake. Some witty observations and one-liners, plus a good degree of core make this the kind of tone I like.

The Zombie Cop by Jon Lymon

Many might say this doesn’t deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as the above titles. Well, if you’re reading this and have still only inhaled once, congratulations on an epic lung capacity. Otherwise, you’ll be on a different breath by now. This, for me, is the best of the Jake Rodwell zombie trilogy but I would say that, wouldn’t I? You can find out more here….
