Jon Lymon Reviews The Long Shoe by Bob Mortimer

Confession time: I find it hard to review audiobooks. When you read a print version, you’ve got the text to refer to, serving as a reminder of character names and sections you’ve enjoyed which help with a review. Not so when someone’s reading to you, as Bob does with this.

As with Bob’s other books, there’s a decent enough plot revolving around the relationship between Matt, a former bathroom salesman and Harriet, a current fraud lawyer, that seems to be going down the plug hole.

When she goes missing, Matt thinks she’s left him, but it’s not so simple as that, as you’d expect.

Can’t say I enjoyed this as much as Mortimer’s previous works. The plot wasn’t as engaging or as complex as those previous works. But there’s enough amusement here in terms of the totally unexpected turns of phrase that only Bob can rustle up, and enough interest generated by Matt’s conversations with his cat with attitude and his interactions with flirty neighbour, Carol.

If you’re new to Bob’s writing, I’d recommend another of his works, but if you’ve read those, there’s just about enough laugh out loud moments here to make it worth the read.
