Worst Month of the Year for Book Sales

A sale, a sale. My Kingdom for a sale.

As every indie author will tell you, there’s a real sense of wanting to reach out and hug and even kiss every person who buys one of your books.

There are millions of books out there, many backed by the promoting might of big publishing houses. So when someone chooses to invest in your indie book ahead of all the others they could have chosen, it’s quite a moment.

Now it’s time to get a little negative and look at the other end of the scale. Those months when sales didn’t really get going quite to the level I’d hoped.

For fellow authors, this information could help with planning advertising campaign, or all the data I’ve gathered could be peculiar to me.

As I’ve mentioned in other posts, the summer months seem to be when my sales slack off. Writing dark comedy and horror that’s best read by a roaring fire on evenings when it’s dark by 4PM might explain these results:

3rd worst month for book sales:                 AUGUST

2nd worst month for book sales:                JUNE

Worst month for book sales in 2025:    JULY

Thanks to everyone who did buy one of my books in those slow sales months. Much appreciated, as is every sale no matter the month of the year.

There’s not much I think I can do to boost sales, except maybe write a dark comedy horror set on a beach maybe…
