Book Sales Analysis 2025: Best Date of the Month for Amazon Free Book Offers

I’m Jon Lymon, an indie book author whose best selling titles are the novel The Wronged and the novella The Ghost of Christmas Threeve. Not heard of either? Well, like I said, I’m an indie book author.

For the whole of 2025 I tracked the sales, giveaways, and KENP performance of my books (10 novels, 3 novellas and several children’s books). The tracking was manually conducted, looking at reports from Amazon and D2D. No Ai was used, because Ai never needs to be used when you have a brain.

Now I’m sharing some of the results, which may or may not be of interest/assistance to other indie writers. If not of interest, you should have left this page before reading this sentence.

To Freebie or Not to Freebie

I’ve heard writers say that offering a freebie often leads to a spike in KENP reads, and although I have experienced this in the past, I’ve not done so recently.

Some people don’t like to ever offer work they’ve slaved over for free, and I hear that.

How to offer a Free Book on Amazon

To offer customers a free digital download of your book, you need to register with KDP Select, which means the digital edition of your book can only be available for sale on Kindle/Amazon. So you’ll need to delist it from other platforms. And I recommend you do follow the rules as you don’t want an email from Amazon. They will find out.

KDP Select enrolment lasts about 3 months. This allows you to offer EITHER a Kindle Countdown Deal or 5 days of free giveaways during the 3 month term. I’ve had plenty of success with the latter, but Countdown deals haven’t worked forh me. However, I will be trying again in January with my most successful title over the festive period The Ghost of Christmas Threeve.

Best Dates of the Month to offer Freebie Giveaways on Amazon:

In 2025, there was a clear winner:

The 26th of the month

But, but, but, this is largely down to the fact that I offer a Boxing Day Bonanza of freebies to readers – not all my books, but a fair few of them.

Away from that, the 6th of month was a close second, with the 1st of the month third.

Learnings

I have to say that in 2025 I offered considerably fewer freebies than in previous years, so it’s no great surprise to learn that my earnings for the year were up.

I don’t think I’ll make my 2026 dystopian novel Dead Headz available for free. But that’s easy to say now. Most times, I just want as many people as possible reading a new title in its early days to give it a chance of getting off zero when it comes to reviews. So we’ll see.
